A London double-decker bus left the road on the afternoon of Saturday 3 October and came to a stop in the front garden of a block of flats in Penge.

It happened on Newlands Park, near Penge East station, on a bend behind the station.

Footage shared with UB1UB2 shows the red double-decker on the grass outside the flats with its front pushed into a tree. Branches are pressed against the top deck windows, and the building's front door is only a few metres away.

What is known so far

The footage shows the bus well off the carriageway. It had crossed the pavement and the kerb and stopped on the lawn in front of the building. A bus shelter stands at the edge of the pavement nearby. Several people, including a family with a pushchair, can be seen standing on the grass close to the scene.

The cause of the incident has not been confirmed. The police, the London Ambulance Service and Transport for London have not confirmed whether anyone on the bus or nearby was injured.

It is also not officially confirmed which route the bus was running on. TfL's information for the Newlands Park stops shows the road is served by routes 75 and 194. Both are double-decker routes linking Penge with Croydon, Lewisham and Sydenham.

About the area

Newlands Park is a mainly residential road on the border of Penge and Sydenham, in the London Borough of Bromley. Low-rise blocks of flats with grass frontages line the road, and it runs past Penge East station, which has Southeastern trains towards London Victoria and Kent.

The road bends sharply around the back of the station. Buses use it as a link between Penge, Lower Sydenham and Crystal Palace. Bus stops on this stretch are named Newlands Park and Penge East.

What happens next

When a London bus is involved in a collision, TfL and the bus operator usually investigate alongside the police where needed. The bus will have to be recovered from the grounds of the flats, and the tree and the land around it may need checking for damage.

Anyone who saw what happened, or who has dashcam footage, can contact the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
