A crash involving two cars closed the A13 at the Lodge Avenue flyover in Barking on Wednesday 28 October, causing long delays for drivers heading out of London.

The collision happened on the eastbound carriageway over the Lodge Avenue roundabout, where the A13 is carried above the junction of Lodge Avenue and Ripple Road.

Footage shared with UB1UB2 shows traffic moving slowly past two badly damaged cars stopped across the lanes, with car parts and debris spread over the road. One car has heavy damage to the front. Workers in high-visibility clothing can be seen further along the carriageway.

Delays towards the North Circular

The eastbound road was closed at the flyover while the scene was dealt with. Congestion reportedly stretched back west towards the North Circular junction at Beckton, one of the busiest points on the A13.

The A13 is a major route between central London, the Docklands and Essex. It carries heavy commuter and freight traffic, so even a short closure at the flyover quickly causes queues on nearby local roads.

Police have not confirmed how the crash happened or whether anyone was hurt. No arrests have been reported. Anyone who saw the collision, or has dashcam footage of it, can contact the Metropolitan Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.

A flyover with a history of disruption

This is not the first time this year that a crash has shut the flyover. The Lodge Avenue flyover was also closed after a collision on 10 September 2026.

The flyover opened in 1973. Transport for London (TfL) plans to replace it, saying the work is needed because of the structure's "age and condition".

TfL has said the replacement is expected to take about two and a half years, which is longer than the two years it first estimated. The contractor Dragados has been appointed as delivery partner by Road Management Services, which manages and maintains a 25km stretch of the A13 for TfL, including the flyover.

Some business owners near the junction have said they are worried about how the long works will affect trade and access. TfL has not yet given a start date for the main replacement works.

Before you travel

Drivers who use the A13 regularly are advised to check TfL's live traffic updates before setting off, particularly at peak times, and to allow extra time while the replacement project is planned.
