Flats evacuated after Mercedes crashes into building on Bicester Road in Aylesbury
About 10 flats were cleared after a silver Mercedes AMG left the road and hit a four-storey block at the corner of Putman Street. Police are treating it as a dangerous driving incident and want to hear from witnesses.
About 10 flats in Aylesbury were evacuated after a car left the road and crashed into a four-storey block of flats on the morning of Monday 5 October.
Thames Valley Police said that at around 10.35am a silver Mercedes AMG was travelling along Bicester Road, away from the town centre. It then hit a block of flats at the junction of Putman Street and Bicester Road.
The force is treating the crash as a dangerous driving incident. It confirmed that no arrests have been made.
Building badly damaged
Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said it sent two crews from Aylesbury and one officer to the scene. According to the service's account of the call, the crash happened at about 10.45am.
The fire service said the building suffered significant structural damage. About 10 flats inside were evacuated as a precaution.
Firefighters checked the driver and a resident of the ground-floor flat the car hit. No injuries were reported.
Footage shared with UB1UB2 shows the silver saloon resting inside the ground-floor flat, with the wall on the corner of the building broken through. Damaged railings and pieces of wood lie across the pavement and road nearby. Police vehicles were at the scene.
One witness said the driver was overtaking when they lost control. Locals said the car clipped a telegraph pole and flattened railings before hitting the building. Police have not confirmed these details, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Police appeal for witnesses and footage
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are investigating what happened. They want to hear from anyone who saw the car being driven before the crash. They also want dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell camera footage from anyone who may have caught the vehicle on camera.
PC Jake Bye, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: "We are carrying out a thorough investigation into this incident and are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward."
He added that officers were "particularly interested in hearing from motorists who may have seen the silver Mercedes AMG being driven along Bicester Road before the collision, or anyone who has footage that could assist our enquiries."
Anyone with information or footage, and any witness who has not yet spoken to police, can contact Thames Valley Police online or by calling 101. Quote reference number 43260519780. Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
