Commuters packed one platform at Acton Town Underground station from one end to the other during the morning rush hour on Wednesday 4 November.

Footage shared with UB1UB2, filmed at about 8.15am, shows a large crowd standing along the full length of a platform as the camera pans across the tracks. People are standing several deep near the platform edge. The platform the footage was filmed from also looked busy.

It is not yet known what caused the build-up or how long passengers had been waiting. Transport for London (TfL) has not confirmed whether there were delays on the Piccadilly or District lines at the time.

A busy interchange

Acton Town, in the London Borough of Ealing, is one of the main interchanges in west London. District line and Piccadilly line trains both stop there, and it is where the Piccadilly line splits into its Heathrow and Uxbridge branches.

So when trouble on either line slows services, the effects can spread quickly to the stations further west. These include South Ealing, Northfields, Boston Manor, Hounslow and Heathrow on one branch, and Ealing Common, North Ealing, Park Royal, Alperton, Sudbury, South Harrow, Rayners Lane, Ruislip and Uxbridge on the other.

Passengers on the Piccadilly line have faced disruption several times in recent weeks. Delays have been reported on the western branches because of signal problems, and TfL's published list of planned closures shows more weekend engineering work on the line in the coming months.

Checking before you travel

TfL publishes live service updates for every Underground line on its website and the TfL Go app. During severe disruption it often arranges for tickets to be accepted on buses and other rail services, and this is shown in the status update for the affected line.

Passengers on crowded platforms are advised to stand behind the yellow line, follow announcements and staff instructions, and tell a member of staff if they feel unwell or see someone in difficulty.

UB1UB2 has asked TfL what caused the crowding at Acton Town on Wednesday morning and will update this report if it responds.
