A double-decker bus on route 258 got stuck between a pedestrian traffic island and a row of kerbside bollards on Northolt Road in South Harrow on Sunday 11 October.

Footage shared with UB1UB2, filmed at around 3:05pm, shows the red Metroline bus sitting at an angle across the lane. It was showing South Harrow as its destination. The front of the bus was boxed in by the island, and bollards ran along the kerb beside it.

The bus doors were open, and a group of people stood on the pavement next to it. A queue of traffic built up behind the bus, while drivers heading the other way slowly edged past it.

How it happened is unclear

The person who filmed the scene said the bus was stuck between two poles with the island in front of it, which they said should not have been possible. It is not known how the bus ended up there, how long it was stuck or how it was freed.

Neither Transport for London nor the operator has said publicly whether anyone was hurt, whether the bus or roadside street furniture was damaged, or whether services were disrupted. Nothing seen in the footage suggests anyone was injured.

About the route

Route 258 runs between South Harrow bus station and Watford Junction. It goes via Northolt Road, Roxeth Hill, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Harrow town centre, Wealdstone, Harrow Weald and Bushey.

Northolt Road is one of the main roads through South Harrow. It carries several bus routes to and from the bus station near South Harrow Underground station, including the 140 and the 395. Because of this, even a short blockage can quickly cause queues in the area.

Pedestrian islands and bollards like the ones on this stretch are designed to help people cross safely and to stop vehicles mounting the pavement. They also leave large vehicles very little room to get round or out of tight spots.

Passengers who had their journeys affected can contact TfL customer services. Live updates on bus services are on the TfL website and the TfL Go app.
