A driver hit another car on the M25 near Uxbridge and then drove off down the M40 slip road without stopping, dashcam footage shows.

It happened at about 4.02pm on Tuesday 21 October on the clockwise carriageway at Junction 16. This is where the M25 meets the M40, near Denham and close to the border between Buckinghamshire and the London Borough of Hillingdon.

What the footage shows

Footage shared with UB1UB2 shows a silver hatchback pulling out from behind a lorry in one of the outer lanes. It then cuts across the carriageway to reach the M40 exit at the last second, apparently without indicating.

The hatchback hits the car filming, then carries straight on over the chevron markings and down the slip road towards the M40. It does not appear to stop.

It is not known if anyone was hurt. The police have not confirmed whether the collision has been reported to them.

What the law says

Under section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, a driver involved in a collision that damages another vehicle must stop. If asked, they must give their name and address and the vehicle owner's details to anyone with reasonable grounds to ask for them.

If they do not give their details at the scene, they must report the collision to the police as soon as reasonably practicable, and in any case within 24 hours. Failing to stop or failing to report a collision is a criminal offence. It can lead to penalty points, a fine and possible disqualification, and the courts can impose tougher penalties where someone is injured.

The Highway Code tells drivers to watch for road signs and get into the correct lane in good time before a junction. It also says they should never cross the hatched or chevron markings that separate an exit from the main carriageway. Anyone who misses their exit should carry on to the next junction and turn back there.

Reporting an incident

Anyone involved in a collision where the other driver did not stop should report it to the police on 101, or online through the website of the police force covering the area. In an emergency, or if someone is hurt, call 999.

Most police forces accept dashcam footage of driving offences through their online reporting portals. Footage is most useful when it is sent in soon after the incident, along with the date, time and exact location.

Anyone who saw the collision at Junction 16 on the afternoon of 21 October, or who has information about it, can contact the police on 101.
