Revised designs for new Hillingdon Hospital revealed as public consultation opens
Under the updated plans, all 538 overnight beds would be single en-suite rooms and there would be a new birthing suite. Residents have until Sunday 13 December to comment before a fresh planning application is submitted next year.
Revised designs for the new Hillingdon Hospital have been published, and residents are being asked for their views before a new planning application goes to Hillingdon Council.
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has updated its plans for the hospital site on Pield Heath Road. All 538 overnight beds would be in single rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom.
The revised scheme also includes a birthing suite with a midwife-led unit, a multi-storey car park and landscaped gardens. The project has been valued at about £1.5 billion and sits in a cost band of £1 billion to £1.5 billion.
What has changed
The new building would be larger than the version Hillingdon Council has already approved, and it would no longer have a basement. The plans also include a separate energy centre.
The trust has said it redrew the designs to follow Hospital 2.0. This is the national guidance set by the government's New Hospital Programme, a standard blueprint for how new hospitals should be laid out and built.
The original plans for the new hospital received full planning permission on 13 October 2023. In January 2025 the government confirmed that the redevelopment would go ahead in the first wave of the New Hospital Programme. Hillingdon is the only London scheme in that wave, and all hospitals in it are expected to follow the Hospital 2.0 approach.
Why a new hospital is needed
Hillingdon Hospital serves a large part of west London, including Uxbridge, Hayes and West Drayton, and is close to Heathrow. The trust says the current hospital is an old building, and parts of the site were built in the 1940s as emergency wartime accommodation.
The trust has said single rooms would give patients more privacy and dignity and help with infection control. Most beds at the current hospital are on shared wards.
How to have your say
The trust has stressed that this stage is a public consultation, not planning permission. Feedback can be given through the trust's website until Sunday 13 December.
After the consultation closes, the trust plans to submit a new planning application to Hillingdon Council next year. The council will then decide whether to approve the revised scheme.
The trust has said its timeline for the new hospital could change. More information about the redevelopment, including frequently asked questions, is on the trust's website at thh.nhs.uk.
