Passengers at Southall station faced crowded platforms and long queues on Thursday 8 October after a signal failure in the Paddington area caused severe delays on the western branch of the Elizabeth line.
TfL's live service updates reported severe delays between Paddington and Heathrow Airport and between Paddington and Reading from early in the morning. Stations along that stretch include Southall, Hanwell, Hayes & Harlington and West Drayton.
With fewer trains running, people squeezed onto whatever service they could. Footage shared with UB1UB2 shows a security worker on the platform at Southall trying to pull a man off a packed train, which had passengers pressed against the doors.
Queues out of the station doors
The footage also shows staff holding crowds back at the ticket barriers and a queue stretching out through the station entrance as passengers waited to get on to the platforms.
Several passengers said they had not been given clear information about when they would be let through the barriers or when trains would run.
TfL has not said whether anyone was hurt at Southall or why staff tried to remove a passenger from the train. No injuries have been reported.
How the disruption unfolded
At about 6.30am, TfL's status page first reported severe delays between Paddington and Heathrow Airport and Reading while engineers fixed a signal system failure. By 8am, TfL said the fault was in the Paddington area.
Severe delays continued through the morning rush hour, and tickets were accepted on London Underground and other rail services so passengers could take other routes. TfL also said tickets could be used on Great Western Railway and South Western Railway services.
By 10.15am, TfL had downgraded the problem to minor delays between Paddington and Heathrow Airport and Reading, which it said were caused by the earlier signal failure in the Paddington area.
TfL has not said how many trains were cancelled or how many passengers were affected.
A busy stretch of the line
Southall is one of the busiest stations on the western branch of the Elizabeth line. It is used by commuters from Southall, Norwood Green and nearby parts of Ealing and Hillingdon, and by travellers heading to Heathrow.
Delays at Paddington, where Elizabeth line trains from the west run into the central tunnels, often spread quickly along the route. That leaves stations such as Southall, Hanwell and Hayes & Harlington with long gaps between trains and crowded platforms.
In May 2026, TfL brought in extra weekday morning peak services at Southall, Hanwell and Acton Main Line to add capacity on this part of the line.
Passengers can check live service information on the TfL website before they travel. Those whose journey was delayed by 15 minutes or more may be able to claim compensation through TfL's Delay Refund scheme.
